The third day’s play saw India resume at an overnight total of 25 for 1. Stuart Broad provided the first breakthrough when his short ball jagged back a long way to hit the glove of Cheteshwar Pujara (24) and fly to the keeper. Broad would soon have Murali Vijay bowled for 35 off the bottom edge with the opener trying to leave one too late outside off.

Virat Kohli was expected to come good finally and he did get a start before he jabbed Jimmy Anderson’s away going delivery to first slip having scored 39. India got through a fighting partnership after this between Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma. However, a rush of blood saw Rohit Sharma (28) miscuing a needless big shot off Moeen Ali to mid off leaving India at 210 for 5. In no time, a well set Ajinkya Rahane too had a soft dismissal as he miscued his pull shot in the air off a half tracker from Moeen Ali. Rahane was out for 54 which came in 113 balls with 5 fours.

India got through another promising partnership but not the real big one to save the day. Ravindra Jadeja scored 31 before he was trapped lbw by a Jimmy Anderson’s late inswinger with the second new ball. Bhuvneshwar Kumar contributed 19 before he was caught by Gary Ballance in the slips off a bat pad inside edge to Stuart Broad.

The visitors finished the day’s play with Skipper MS Dhoni batting on a gritty 50 while having just the no.10 and no.11 left.
